Introduction
We are having an effect! In fact, so much of one that Talk Radio Network, Inc. (the company that syndicates "The Savage Nation") has filed a lawsuit against this site (as well as attempting to seize our domain name), blaming us for "lost advertising contracts and business opportunities [...] in an amount in excess of $500,000.00." They also claim that the decision by Culligan International Company to cease advertising on "The Savage Nation" cost them in excess of $100,000! See Culligan's email to michaelsavagesucks.com: "We have no plans to support that programming in the future."
Check out the "The Advertisers Speak!" and other "Advertiser" labeled columns. These prove Savage's contention that he's not lost a single advertiser is a flat out lie. In fact, newsflash 10/3/2002 - "Another Advertiser Speaks--personally" documents the withdrawl of a major national advertiser from the Savage Nation. Notice how many no name, sleazy advertisers his show has these days -- our grassroots campaign is having a major effect.
Check this email from the President of Swiss-America, sent in response to a SavageStupidity.Com reader's email. He says, "I have had similar messages from other listeners." Obviously, this reader's message is not the only one they have received. Keep up the good work folks.
NEW, 6/10/2003: Listen to a Stop Hate Radio PSA (in MP3 format) created by the Knights of Englightenment for their Internet Radio Station that uses selections from a Savage diatribe threatening boycott activists (click on "Stop Hate Radio PSA" to listen to it).
Sign Our Petitions
Join us in demanding that balance be restored to the airwaves! Sign our petition pledging to boycott companies that sponsor "The Savage Nation", and tell all your friends!
Comment from a petition signee: Savage is on right now in my market -- we listened to him on the way home from eating at Panera Bread -- he was playing Frank Sinatra's "My Way" and reciting the words along with Frank -- on those grounds alone, I'll sign the petition! LOL :)
Sign the petition to bring liberal talk radio to the San Francisco Bay Area radio; specifically, hosts Mike Malloy, Peter Werbe and the i.e. America radio network in general.
Sign the petition supporting removal of "under God" from the Pledge of Allegiance. Michael claims he's gotten thousands of signatures on a paper petition attacking the 9th Circuit of Appeals (the one that ruled the inclusion of "under God" in the pledge was unconstitutional), but he won't give out the details. Let's fight him out in the open!

Boycott Background and News Coverage
Savage sees himself and his listeners as martyrs in the cause of truth (comparing his listeners those who died for civil rights in the South in the 1960's is delusional behavior of the highest order):
"You are going to have to endure the verbal equivalence of the police dogs at Montgomery. You are going to have to endure the water cannon abuse in words, and in gestures, that the civil rights protesters received in Selma. The PC storm troopers are going to try to make you feel ashamed of yourself. They're going to try to pretend that you don't exist, and yet they're only going to make you stronger."

Here's an article on the boycott effort in Oregon by the Coalition Against Hate Radio that prompted Michael's comments (this is the only organized effort I'm aware of):
Oregon-Washington groups calls for end to 'hate radio'
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- Church, community and political groups in Oregon and Washington are demanding an end to what they call 'hate radio' and have called on a station owned by billionaire Paul Allen to drop talk show host Michael Savage.
[...]
Press Release By Oregon Coalition Against Hate Radio
This boycott effort got Michael's goat, according to Radio Business Report:
Fisher Communications' KATU-TV Portland and the AP reported 4/25 that Talk Radio Networks' Michael Savage, host of "Savage Nation," has reacted angrily to critics of his show. He called his critics radical leftists who are trying to interfere with his right to earn a living. He threatened to sue them. A coalition of Oregon and Washington church and civic leaders demanded that KXL-AM Portland stop airing the show, saying it promoted hatred and bigotry and could lead to acts of violence against immigrants and minorities. Savage says his critics have a right to dislike what he says on the air. "That's what talk radio is all about," he says, "disagreement. That's also what the Bill of Rights is all about."
AP News Article in Oregon Register-Guard on Michael Savage's response (locally cached copy):
"If they are calling me these names ... they are interfering with my ability to earn a living, and I may sue them," he said in a telephone interview from his home in northern California.
"I don't cave in," Savage said.
Go ahead and sue me, Michael. Make my day. :)
San Francisco Indy Media Coverage and commentary
Brad Kava, in a column dated June 6th, 2001, covered a local boycott being organized in Sacramento against KSTE (local station) for broadcasting Savage:
In Sacramento, an organization of Asian-American groups has taken the lead against several hate-talkers, including KSFO-AM's now nationally syndicated Michael Savage. Rather than asking for FCC help, they have sent letters to advertisers and picketed the Sacramento station, KSTE, which airs the show.
Calling the Chinese "little devils," Savage called for dropping nuclear weapons on the country and said that Chinese-Americans should be put in internment camps if they wouldn't sign loyalty oaths.
"It goes far beyond ridiculing a certain ethnic group or calling names or making a certain group the brunt of jokes," says Georgette Imura, part of a Sacramento group called CAPITAL (the Council of Asian Pacific Islanders Together for Advocacy and Leadership at 5665 Freeport Blvd., Suite 2, Sacramento 95822).
"What it does is send a message to misguided folks that it's OK to act and talk that way. Our fear is that this will lead to acts of violence or discrimination."
MSNBC and "The Savage Show"

Write MSNBC and let them know what you think about their choice of talk show hosts (link takes you to GLAAD action website).
|
Patriotboy Parody Image (taken from entry re: Savage on Patriotboy BlogSite) | |
Earlier this year (February 2003), MSNBC decided to dump veteran liberal talk show host Phil Donahue, and add several conservative talk show hosts to its line up, including Michael Savage. In response, a bevy of national organizations put together a campaign to urge MSNBC to rethink their decision to give the Weiner a national forum on television, including GLAAD (which has put together a very detailed resource site documenting his homophobia), the National Organization for Women, Fairness and Accuracy In Reporting (FAIR) and many others. Click on the GLAAD link for detailed information on who to contact at NBC about this decision.
Sample Letter
See also the Guest Editorial: Letter to a CEO From Anonymous Reader and The Advertisers Speak! columns for more samples.
Note: in order of significance, a written letter sent via the USPS, a phone call, and an email will have the most impact. Companies do pay attention - one SavageStupidity.Com reader informs me that he has already received a couple of letters from Savage Nation advertisers who will no longer be supporting the program. If you contact a sponsor via email, please "cc" boycott@savagestupidity.com so we can see how we're doing. If you get a positive (or negative) response, let us know!
Copy and paste this into your email or word processing program, then modify to suit. Personalization is good:
Dear [company name],
I would like to express my complete and utter disgust that you are sponsoring the
racist, sexist, homophobic, and otherwise hateful rantings of Michael Savage and his
"Savage Nation" radio show. Is this the image you want to promote to the public?
"Fat lesbians are anti-family."
"Hispanics breed like rabbits."
"It's time for hate. I'm sick of love, love, love."
Is this your target audience?
As long as you continue to sponsor the Savage Nation, I will be boycotting your
company and urging all my friends to do likewise.
Regards,
Joanne Citizen

Thanks to MichaelSavageSucks.com for compiling the list of advertisers (we are working on obtaining an updated list).
Note: I had been obtaining this list from the MichaelSavageSucks.com site, but he is no longer providing this information in a monthly format - instead, he is just carrying a list of current advertisers. Your best course of action at this time? Click on the banner below and write Savage's advertisers through MichaelSavageSucks.com (or just visit the site and write your own letters, directly). Note: I did get a response from one company, immediately after I filled out the form on the MichaelSavageSucks.com site, so it does work, the addresses are valid and up to date (mostly).
Some of the links below may not work, as I have not yet been able to identify web sites for all the companies and products involved, also - some of these companies may have come to their senses, as Tempur-Pedic, Inc. has or simply no longer be advertising (since it has been up to a year since they were first listed). If you find any errors (or hear from any of them that they have ceased advertising with the Savage Nation), please contact info@savagestupidity.com with corrections and updates.
*** at the beginning of a listing indicates a repeat offender.

- *** CountryWide.Com - Countrywide Home Loans, Inc., a subsidiary of Countrywide Credit Industries, Inc. They can be contacted via the Contact Us page on their web site. I would specifically target their dedicated Public Relations/Media Line: (800) 796-8448; this is a publicly traded company, so if you own stock, you can contact their investor relations department at ir@countrywide.com, , which is typically also a very effective strategy (if you own at least one share); if you're not an investor, an email to webmaster@countrywide.com will likely get forwarded on to the proper location. Large companies like this tend to be much more conservative in their advertising policies, so they are a good target.

- *** Tempur-Pedic, Inc. - US Manufacturer of Swedish Sleep Systems, Tempur Mattresses and Pillows. You can reach them with complaints about their marketing/advertising via the form at the bottom of their "Contact Us" page. Select "Marketing / Advertising" from the list of options, and then fill out the form to send an email. Address your message to Bob Trussell, Tempur-Pedic ® Founder and CEO. You might also contact local retail distributors of Tempur-Pedic products, and mention to your doctor or chiropractor (if they offer them) that you're upset that Tempur-Pedic is advertising on Savage's show. If you're one of those distributors, you might call them up yourself. A few calls of this sort are likely to have a large impact.
