Do you seriously think that the right-wing corporate media titans would ever let someone like Mike Malloy or Peter Werbe get broad distribution? It isn't a coincidence that the network (i.e. America) they are syndicated through (to barely 100 stations) is owned by the United Auto Workers. The only voices providing even the mildest resistance to the corporate domination of our country's public dialogue are those of the unions. The market drives what is on the radio, but only after the conservative corporate media titans have had their say. That's why we need to reinstate the Fairness Doctrine, to compensate for their bias.

Go dig up the City of Santa Cruz's Homeless Issues Task Force report, or have Ken Cole at the Homeless Service Center give you a tour of his facility to get a clue about the real problem of homelessness. Whether or not I'm cashing any EDD checks is none of your business, but if I were to, so what? I worked for years, built two companies and created fifty jobs - all along, paying employment taxes both for myself and for my employees. Why should I feel any more guilty than you would? And what alternative reality do you live in, that makes $330/week the lap of luxury in Santa Cruz? Get over yourself, you've got some serious internal issues to work out. "Borders, Language, Culture" is bullshit. I don't buy any of it. I'm for open borders, letting people speak whatever language they want (and behaving like the rest of the civilized world by ensuring that our children can speak more than just their native language) and am damned happy with the set of values I was born and raised with, which I think represents the authentic American spirit and has nothing to do with Savage's hate-mongering. You're the one that is against free speech - the "my country, love it or leave it" line went out with the 1960's and Barry Goldwater. My ancestors have been here since the Pilgrims (some of them before, even). Some of them have been here so long that their ancestry fades into the Tennessee hills. One grandfather served the Santa Monica police for thirty years, the other was a farmer his entire life. I love it (and the ideals it stands for), and I'm not going anywhere. We are about to elect an openly gay man to the State legislature (one of two queer men, and three or four women, that will be serving in the state legislature), and an openly lesbian woman to our local school board, and I'm a candidate for City Council - I may not win this time (for reasons other than you would like to think) since I'm running against three former Mayors, but I'll probably win next time. This year, California passed legislation expanding the rights of domestic partners to inherit in the absence of a will, and for domestic partners with an ill family member to take paid sick leave on the same basis as legally married heterosexual couples. MY values are the majority values in this country - your values are that of a hateful minority that is getting more and more frantic as it looses its ability to impose them on other people. I'm not going anywhere - you're the one that is going to have to leave if you want to live in a place run the way you'd obviously prefer.

1. Free speech doesn't include a "right" to broadcast by any one individual. If Savage can't survive in the free market of radio via professional syndication, because he's too controversial for advertisers (once they're informed) to support, that's just as much his problem as it is that of anyone else trying to break into radio. In no way is his "freedom of speech" being harmed - he can still broadcast over the Internet, maintain a web site, buy his own radio time and sell advertising, etc.
2. I'm not trying to "dictate" anyone's opinion - I'm simply demanding that all voices be heard. Believe it or not, millions of people agree with my political positions (if they didn't, you right wingnuts wouldn't be constantly complaining about the "liberal" media, etc.), but we have absolutely no representation and no way to have our voices heard. This is not a "market" issue, this is a conspiracy by the conservative media monoliths (funny how both "liberals" and "conservatives" both see the media as pushing exactly opposite views) to exclude our point of view from the discussion. 3. This is an utterly specious argument - the Pledge of Allegiance is a tool of the state, which has no business sanctioning any particular religious point of view, especially in tool as basic as this. Freedom of religion has nothing to do with it. And, to be specific, I damn well have a right to be "free from religion" when the state attempts to impose it upon me. You're free to include "Under God" when you say the Pledge, but you have no right to demand that the state teach it with "Under God" included, or that representatives of the state include it when they use it - and we have every right to demand that they NOT use "Under God", when they say it in the course of their official duties. The 9th Circuit is indesputably correct here - the arguments about "ceremonial religion" are nothing but excuses for inconsistencies and don't wash.
